A new platform for African craft, expressed through light. The Pill is the first collection by Luminaire d’Afrique, a lighting platform conceived by Beheld to bring African craft knowledge into technically resolved, internationally viable contemporary products. Developed with Greencraft Lighting, the collection uses a shared hand-blown glass form to hold a growing series of luminous “skins.” Each is created through a different craft practice, allowing the form to remain recognisable while every material, technique and maker retains a distinct identity. The Pill was first introduced as part of FloodLight, the immersive lighting exhibition created by Beheld for Decorex Africa 2026 in collaboration with spatial lighting designer Martin Döller.

Input

How can traditional knowledge find new applications while retaining the techniques and cultural identities that give it meaning? Luminaire d’Afrique was conceived as a platform dedicated to the creation of world-class lighting on the African continent. It connects craft practitioners and rural material economies with glassblowers, designers and specialist manufacturers, creating the infrastructure required to take African lighting from concept to certified production. The Pill became the first practical expression of this idea: both an incubator through which new collaborations could be developed and a vitrine through which African material intelligence could be seen.

Output

A growing collection of limited-edition pendant lights combining African craft, responsible materials and specialist lighting manufacture. Greencraft Lighting developed the technical lighting system, metal components and assembly process from its Johannesburg studio. Finishes include chrome, rose gold and steel, with each light assembled entirely by hand. The collection complies with South African requirements as well as CE standards for Europe and UL standards for the USA and Canada, allowing work made through small-scale African craft economies to enter international residential, hospitality and collectible-design markets. The project supports rural producers, most of whom are women, alongside glassblowers and skilled urban manufacturers. It places value on the time, knowledge and labour behind each object, creating new applications for existing skills while supporting their transmission. Rather than treating heritage craft as decoration added to a finished product, The Pill makes craft the source of the product itself.
