About
Since 2018, Beheld has worked across exhibitions, publications, institutions, platforms and public programs — from independent studios and cultural foundations to continental design fairs and international biennales. Across every project, we shape the thinking, tell the story and build the conditions for culture to be experienced, remembered and shared.

Principles
On making and sharing
Beheld was built on a single conviction: that the greatest creative work is defined not only by what is made, but by what is shared. We believe that culture, handled with intelligence and care, has the power to change how people see the world and each other — and that the act of sharing is not secondary to the creative process, but intrinsic to it. Every platform we build, every exhibition we curate, every story we tell is driven by this instinct. We don't make things to keep them. We make things to move them.
On Africa and the world
We are a practice rooted in the creative life of the African continent — not as a niche or a point of difference, but as the foundation from which we see and work. We believe African design, craft, architecture and culture deserve to be experienced, discussed and shared with the same rigour, ambition and dignity as the work of any other creative tradition in the world. Our role is not to explain Africa to the world, or the world to Africa, but to build the conditions in which that conversation happens on equal terms — and to do it properly, every time.

Background
Garreth van Niekerk is a curator, writer and creative director whose work moves between design, publishing, exhibitions and cultural strategy. Rooted in the creative life of the African continent, his practice is concerned with how ideas, objects and places are framed, remembered and felt. As co-founder of Always Welcome and co-creative director of Decorex Africa and 100% Design Africa, he has helped build platforms that give South African and African design a more ambitious public life. At Beheld, he brings a curatorial eye, a writer’s instinct and a belief in culture as something that must be carefully shaped in order to be truly seen.
Alan Hayward is a creative director and cultural strategist working across design, art, exhibitions and public culture. His practice sits between storytelling, strategy, partnerships and audience-building, with a focus on helping cultural projects find their clearest public form. Through his work with Decorex Africa, 100% Design Africa, the Inside Out Centre for the Arts and the Roger Ballen Centre for Photography, he has helped shape platforms that connect creative ideas with meaningful audiences. At Beheld, Alan brings strategic clarity, cultural sensitivity and a strong instinct for how projects should be seen, shared and remembered.

Capabilities
Our practice is rooted in the belief that meaningful design requires constraint, clarity, and cultural literacy. We see design as a structural act, one that reveals relationships, defines rhythm, and articulates purpose.
A visual identity should not rely on stylistic gestures, but grow from a coherent, strategic foundation. Every choice in typography, layout, and proportion must reflect deeper considerations: of audience, of context, of intent.
Every deliverable is designed for use, not just presentation. Whether we are shaping a typographic identity, building a responsive website, or designing editorial layouts, our focus remains the same: create systems that guide, support, and evolve.
